About Shelley
I hold a BA from the University of Oregon in Eugene. Since moving to Fort Collins in 1996, I have been working with students primarily in an after-school enrichment program.
More recently, my training includes metacognitive comprehension strategies first discussed by John Flavell in 1979. Many others have written about these techniques including Fountas and Pinnell in 2000.
Simply stated, metacognitive teaching theories utilize a process by which we guide our students to become more strategic thinkers. We utilize questioning, visualizing, and synthesizing information.
Students learn to examine their own thinking processes. With practice, these techniques help them to make their reading skills become automatic.
I believe that all students are capable of achieving milestones in their education so long as they are provided with a nurturing and success-driven environment. Although my training is academic, my greatest skills are in "reading" my students and responding to their needs on an individual basis.
